Financial elder abuse results when someone misappropriates the financial resources of an older adult. This form of abuse often occurs when a caretaker or family member takes advantage of someone left in their care, custody and control. However, this abuse can also take place when a corporate employee swindles someone out of thousands of dollars. Sometimes this occurs in the form of a construction project to “fix” something that is not in need of repairs. Other times the abuse can be in the form of a fraudulent or deceptive product or service. Sadly, this form of elder abuse not only causes severe financial hardship, but it can also have a devastating emotional impact on the harmed individual resulting in stress, panic attacks, social withdrawal, and even early death.
